Amazon announces the aquisition of BuyVip

Now it’s official: BuyVip, the spanish shopping community, was bought by Amazon. Accourding to Greg Greeley, (Vice President European Retail at Amazon) the site is an excellent addition to the existing european business from Amazon. The purchase price was not announced but there are rumors about a sum close to 70 million €. BuyVip claims to have more than six million members. The company operates in Spain, Italy, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands and in Portugal. Just in April of the last year BuyVip received a capital injection of 14.9 million €.

The leading Dutch social network Hyves was just sold to TMG (Telegraaf Media Groep). The sum of this deal is undisclosed right now. Hyves has a 68% penetration in the Netherlands but began to feel the unstopable fame of Facebook. The dutch social network, with over 10.6 million members, was founded in 2004 by Koen Kam, Floris Rost van Tonningen and Raymond Spanjar. The Hyves-Team is based in Amsterdam.

The proposed acquisition of the French real estate portal SeLoger by Axel Springer AG (a major german media company) threatens to become a bidding race. A few days after the offer of Axel Springer, a big Australian investment-fonds has invested in the French internet company. The Australian fonds named Caledonia just acquired 10% of the shares. Originally Axel Springer wanted to pay round about 500 million € for the SeLoger-acquisition. The German Media Company already owns 12,4% of the french real estate website. In addition to the new investor Caledonia, there also seems to be other companies that are interested in SeLoger (the newspaper “Le Figaro” and the French company “Lagardere”). The Paris-based SeLoger has over the years developed into a very profitable online-business within the real estate-market.

In February of this year, the two German internet entrepreneurs Dirk Schwartz and Tim Stracke bought Chrono24 – a marketplace for high quality watches. With the additional purchase of the Australian competitor WatchChoice, they are now going to establish an international market leader. The price for WatchChoice.com was not disclosed yet. The WatchChoice-founder Glenn Palmer will from now on support the further expansion of the two businesses in Asia and Australia. Chrono24 operates in 25 countries and is based in Karlsruhe (Germany).

The global e-commerce-giant ebay just bought the Germany based shopping club brands4friends for 150 million Euro. The last official valuation of the brand community was about 100 million Euro. That was when Tengelmann bought 10 percent of brands4friends for 10 million Euro in the beginning of 2010. Especially the previous investors should be happy with this great exit. Doug McCallum, Senior Vice President of eBay in Europe, said: “With the acquisition of brands4friends we are entering the market of online shopping clubs with an established and dynamic partner, whose expertise, relationships and passion is matching perfectly with our goals”. Also brand4friends is sure to have found the perfect partner with ebay. brands4friends was founded in 2007 and employs around 200 people.

The Manchester based social games developer Playdemic was recently bought by the USA based RockYou. Founded in 2005, RockYou is one of the leading developers of social games and is also inventing in the space of advertising solutions for social media. In the future Playdemic will, according to RockYou, operate independently as a subsidiary studio and develop Facebook games for a mainstream audience.
