Today, at the Digital Day 2018 in Brussels, the European Commission has launched the Innovation Radar: a data-driven online tool which provides easy access to innovations supported by EU funding and the innovators behind them. It will allow every citizen, public official, professional and business person to discover the outputs of EU innovation funding and give them a chance to seek out innovators who could follow in the footsteps of companies such as Skype, TomTom, ARM Holdings, all of whom received EU funding in their early days. Innovation Radar is not only a databank: it is designed to help broker contact between EU-funded innovators and, for example, investors or other professionals who can help them get their innovations to market, be it with additional expertise or capital.
European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, Mariya Gabriel, launched the Innovation Radar online tool during Digital Day 2018. Commissioner Gabriel said:
Europe has a great track record in developing new technologies and EU funding plays a major role. With the Innovation Radar we are launching today we not only want to showcase EU-funded innovations but also help innovators in key technologies such as Big Data, Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity connect to other entrepreneurs and businesses, investors, incubators and accelerators to speed up their market entry and growth. I invite everyone to have a look at the exciting innovations the EU is funding.
EU Member States have recognised the value and need for such a tool and Ministers from 17 countries are signing an Innovation Radar declaration at Digital Day 2018 to demonstrate their commitment to use it to promote innovative excellence in their countries. These countries share the Commission’s ambition of using Innovation Radar to foster the emergence of a dynamic ecosystem around the output of EU R&I programmes. The European Commission will also work closely with the Members States to further develop the data-driven Innovation Radar tool, for example by integrating further data and enhancing the profiles of EU-funded innovators.
The Innovation Radar tool can be accessed via the web (ec.europa.eu/innovation-radar) or as a Smartphone app (download from the iOS and Android app stores).
List of signatory countries of the Declaration
The Innovation Radar Declaration was launched at Digital Day 2018 and signed by Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Norway.
Other countries have since joined the initiative:
Romania in May 2018;
Spain in May 2018.
