At ICT 2018, organized by the European Commission and the Austrian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, citizens can join science community members, policymakers, and fellow ICT innovators to discuss the future in a digital Europe. Over 6000 delegates are expected.

Overview

The European Commission’s flagship event ICT 2018 will focus on the European Union’s priorities in the digital transformation of society and industry. It will present an opportunity for the people involved in this transformation to share their experience and vision of Europe in the digital age.

 

This Innovation and Startups Village is also enriched with the Startup and Innovation Forum. On Dec 5 and 6 it hosts sessions on Blockchain, Deep Tech, European Innovation Council , Disruptive Innovation as well as the Innovation Radar Awards.

Startup Europe

Initiative launched by the European Commission to connect startups, investors, accelerators, entrepreneurs, corporate networks, universities and the media through an array of networks with a view of boosting the Digital Single Market.

Innovation Radar

European Commission’s initiative designed to identify high potential innovations and innovators in EU-funded research and innovation projects. The platform builds on information and data gathered by independent experts involved in reviewing ongoing EU-funded projects. The 2018 Innovation Radar prize will also be awarded at ICT 2018, after the finalists pitch their innovation to a jury of experts.

DORIS – EC Innovative Systems

The project is aimed at showcasing innovative tools and systems supporting a more efficient and close-to-citizen public service covering several fields ranging from – inter alia – Artificial Intelligence to Data Analytics and Web Platforms.

BAE: Business Angels Europe
Business Angels Europe (BAE) is the European Confederation of Angel Investing, representing the European Business Angels’ Federations and Trade associations in Europe. BAE brings together the most active and developed countries operating in the angel market in Europe.

EBAN: European Business Angels

Pan-European representative of the early stage investor community, established in 1999, today EBAN gathers over 193 member organisations in more than 66 countries. EBAN represents a key sector whose investments amount to € 8.1 billion a year and that plays a crucial role in the funding of SMEs.

EIT: European Institute of Technology

The purpose of this open innovation organisation is to foster digital technology innovation and entrepreneurial talent for economic growth and quality of life in Europe. EIT bring together entrepreneurs, SMEs, start-ups, universities and research institutes and it invests in strategic areas to accelerate the market uptake of research-based digital technologies and to bring entrepreneurial talent and leadership to Europe.

The European Innovation Council (EIC) aims to support top-class researchers, innovators, Startups and entrepreneurs with bright ideas and the ambition to scale-up internationally.

Digital Innovation Hubs

Digital Innovation Hubs are one-stop-shops that help companies to become more competitive with regard to their business/production processes, products or services using digital technologies. A DIH is a regional multi-partner cooperation (including organizations like RTOs, universities, industry associations, chambers of commerce, incubator/accelerators, regional development agencies and even governments) and can also have strong linkages with service providers outside of their region supporting companies with access to their services.

EU-funded innovations

AEROX – Industrial Contact Inspection With Drones (Spain)

This industrial contact inspection drone performs ultrasonic inspections at height with minimum risk and 10 times faster than with regular means. AEROX incorporates a flying mode that lows moving the sensor from the ground to a specific location without remotely piloting the drone.

Aximmetry – Virtual Studio Software (Hungary)

This project aims at creating a high-end, virtual studio software technology accessible to small TV stations, Institutions, Youtubers and Vloggers. Aximmetry enables users to create content – that can only be live-streamed to on YouTube and Facebook – using just one fix camera.

BITalino – Low Cost Biomedical Hardware and Software Toolkit (Portugal)

BITalino is a low-cost hardware and open-source software operating in the field of biomedicine. Primarily designed for students, teachers, artists and researches, it was developed in the scope of EU-funded RAPID-MIX, with the aim of improving the overall user experience concerning the access to biomedical technologies.

HUman MANufacturing Workplace (Norway)

Together with 12 partners from 6 European countries, it aims to define and demonstrate workplaces where automation and human workers operate in harmony to improve the productivity, quality, performance of the factory as well as the worker satisfaction and safety.

ICView – Intensive Care Information and Tele-ICU System (Ireland)

Intensive care radar and visual ICU cockpit aimed at improving the quality and efficiency of healthcare as well as its accessibility. Already implemented in European hospitals as part of the THALEA PCP Project, it is designed to help clinicians monitoring patients’ conditions and managing clinical workflow.

InnoConnect – Maps with Analytical Tools (Czech Republic)

The project is aimed at helping people to understand their data and to use it to support their decisions through high interactive maps. InnoConnect brings data into maps thus allowing users to benefit from visual insights, such as discovering trends and patterns over time and space.

LeanXcale – Database Management System (Spain)

Spinoff of the technical university of Madrid, it provides an ultra-scalable operational SQL full ACID database with analytical capabilities. The database offers a dual interface, SQL and key-value, exploiting at the same time the simplicity of SQL for querying and the performance of a key-value interface that avoids the overhead of SQL for operations that don’t require it.

Mag4Health – Towards Low Cost Magnetoencephalography (France)

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is an imaging technique that measures magnetic fields produced by the brain’s electrical activity: this project eliminates the need for cryogenic cooling and reduces the size and weight of the device’s magnetic shield from 5,000 kilograms to 150 kilograms.

Noos – Cloud intelligence for robots (United Kingdom)

Cloud robotics platform, it provides cognitive augmentation for robots. Noos delivers AI-enabled services in real-time via the cloud, hence enhancing the usefulness of service robots. Merging cloud computing with robots, it aims at increasing robots’ safety and context awareness. At a technical level, Noos enabled robots acquire new capabilities without needing new hardware; lowering costs and increasing storage capacity while cutting power consumption.

OPIN – Platform for youth eParticipation in Europe (Germany)

The project is led by the purpose of increasing opportunities for young people’s participation in politics: OPIN is a digital platform which makes it possible for youth workers, city administrators and other people to set up attractive participation projects. It also offers youth-friendly and easy to use digital and mobile participation tools.

Plan4all – Transport of the Future (Czech Republic)

This innovation enables to model and forecast traffic volumes in any location and at any time. Plan4all’s provides the opportunity for citizens, policy makers and transport operators to view the forecasted situation on the road reflecting several variables that may affect the traffic.

REHABILITY – Home Based Neuro-Rehabilitation (Italy)

It allows patients to take part in rehabilitation therapy both within a specialist facility and from home with continuous remote medical support. REHABILITY combines physical with cognitive exercise and it is multi-lingual and can be personalised by medical staff for each patient in every phase of the therapy.

Snap4City – Scalable Smart Analytic Application Builder for Sentient Cities (Italy)

Snap4City is a fully open source, scalable and easy to use solution which provides tools for co-creation of mixt data drive, stream and batch processing. It is a solution for setting up Living Labs engaging different all kinds of stakeholders in contributing to the city evolutions, with a platform providing online tools for developing IOT applications, web and mobile Apps, data analytics etc.

TruthNest – Practical Tools Against Disinformation (Greece)

Aimed at preventing the spread of false/misleading information, TruthNest analyses Tweets providing a comprehensible visualisation to the users on the Contributor, Content and Context of every tweet, thus facilitating the assessment on the trustworthiness of the Tweets.
